Built to Thrive: How Black Men Can Rise Above the Noise of Modern Life

We are living in a time of unprecedented pressure—but also untapped potential.

As midlife Black men in America, we carry the silent weight of resilience. We navigate generational trauma, career ambition, family responsibilities, and societal expectations—all while trying to maintain our health, our peace, and our power.

The world around us is changing fast: artificial intelligence threatens jobs, screens dominate our attention, processed foods dominate our diets, and social media distorts reality. But the truth is—we are not powerless. We are built to adapt, to lead, and to thrive. Here are my seven tips to navigate the chaos and reclaim control.

1. Return to the Source: Nature as Medicine

We are products of the Earth, but our lifestyles have pulled us away from it. Most of us spend less than five hours a week outdoors. That disconnection is showing in our health, our mood, and our energy.

Earthing, or reconnecting physically with the Earth (like walking barefoot on grass or soil), has been touted to reduce stress, inflammation, and even chronic disease. Here's my disclaimer: the scientific evidence is not overwhelming, but many of us who grew up in the Islands or rural areas will testify - Nature doesn’t just calm us—it grounds us.

👉🏾 Example: Actor Mahershala Ali often speaks about solitude in nature and time away from screens as key to his emotional clarity and spiritual balance. It’s not a luxury—it’s a lifeline.

2. Control the Chaos: Reduce Sensory Overload

Modern life bombards us with stimuli—notifications, noise, flashing screens, ads, conversations, and distractions. Your brain and nervous system are in constant overdrive, leading to fatigue, anxiety, and poor focus.

Take back control by curating your environment. Silence unnecessary notifications. Choose quieter, calmer spaces. Limit multi-tasking. It’s not weakness—it’s wisdom.

👉🏾 Try this: Begin each day with 10 minutes of silence before your phone. Let you set the tone—not the world.

3. Fuel Your Power: Eat Like You Matter

A huge percentage of the food on store shelves is highly processed. Even “healthy” options are often loaded with chemicals your body wasn’t designed to process. My diet is plant-based, but I am not exempt from unhealthy processed foods. Every bite is either fighting disease or feeding it.

Invest in simple, whole foods: greens, grains, fruits, lean proteins. If it didn’t grow from the ground or have a mother, think twice.

👉🏾 Start here: Meal prep once a week. Grill fish or chicken, roast veggies, and make quinoa. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress.

4. Read the Labels on Life

What you eat, wear, put on your skin, and clean your home with—it all matters. From toxic cleaning products to artificial ingredients, harmful substances are everywhere.

Be curious. Flip the label. Do the research. Empowerment starts with awareness.

👉🏾 Pro tip: Download a product scanner app like Yuka or Think Dirty. It rates products based on health impact and suggests better alternatives.

5. Reclaim Your Time, Reclaim Your Sanity

Burnout doesn’t always come from doing too much—it comes from imbalance. You might be excelling at work but neglecting your health. Or showing up for everyone but yourself.

Balance isn’t about equal hours—it’s about aligned priorities. Set boundaries. Schedule self-care. Protect your peace like it’s your paycheck.

👉🏾 Real-world example: Former NBA star Grant Hill planned his post-career life with intention, balancing business, family, and personal time. He moved from grind to grace—and so can you.

6. Reconnect with Your Tribe

You were not meant to do life alone. In African tradition, healing and power happen in community. Too often, we suffer in silence when our breakthrough could come through conversation.

Build a small, strong circle of brothers. Barbershop convos. Prayer circles. Business meetups. Whatever your vibe, find your people.

👉🏾 Model it after: The late Chadwick Boseman was part of a tight-knit circle of Black male actors who prayed together, challenged each other, and protected each other's peace. Community heals.

7. Reset Your Expectations, Redefine Your Success

Social media is the highlight reel, not the full story. Don’t measure your worth by someone else’s filtered life.

Define what success means for you. Is it being present with your kids? Starting your own business? Getting off medication? Own your narrative—and let that be enough.

👉🏾 Daily mantra: "I am not behind. I’m on my path."
